To find images to use that you haven’t created yourself, the FirstVoices team recommends that you use Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia Commons is an online repository of free-use images, and can be found by clicking here. Please note the copyright statement below and attribution guidelines from Creative Commons.

That said, it is highly recommended that you use community-sourced images. Whether they be photographs, drawings or other community-created images, this is a great way for community members to get involved with your FirstVoices language site.

Please note that if you are uploading any content onto FirstVoices that isn’t your own, including images, videos and audio files:

  1. You must have permission from the copyright owner to do so.
  2. If you are using an online image database, you should consult the terms of use, and adhere to the attribution requirements for that site.
  3. Copyright law requires you to properly credit whoever owns the content, even if the content is open source or royalty-free. This applies to any image, video, audio recording or other material.

More information on how to credit the source of open source or royalty-free content can be found here.

Warning: The FirstVoices team does not monitor whether or not your media is being sourced appropriately. However, if FirstVoices receives a copyright strike against content on your language site that isn’t properly sourced, we may be legally required to remove all visual media files that do not have source information.
