May 23, 2025 updates: new search, documents, and more
The FirstVoices development team has been working hard on the new FirstVoices release. All new updates have been prompted by the hard-working Language Teams and community members, whose valuable feedback, ideas and suggestions have been crucial in making FirstVoices a better platform.
If you have questions about any of the updates listed below, or have ideas for ways to improve FirstVoices, please contact us at: hello@firstvoices.com

Multi-site search
For many BC First Nations languages, you can find more than one FirstVoices site with different varieties of the language. Now there is a way to search all sites in a language, using the language filter on the main FirstVoices search page.
Select one or more languages, or specific sites that you want to search.
Log in to make sure you can search any private sites you are a member of.
Try it out on the main search page: FirstVoices.com/search
Image and Video widgets
There’s a new way to add visuals to your site homepage or custom page: Image and Video widgets.
Access the new Image Widget and Video Widget in your dashboard.
The new widgets can be used on any page, including your homepage.

New dashboard reports
Find incomplete words and phrases on your site using two new advanced search and report options: categories, and related entries.
Access the new search options on any dictionary dashboard search page, in the Advanced Search area.
Or, visit the Reports section of the dashboard for a pre-filled report on words and phrases that have no categories.

What’s improved?
Fixes
Background color is working on the Text With Image Widget.
Data updates
Galleries restored. Galleries from the old Nuxeo site have been restored, and image files in unsupported formats have been converted so they display properly.
Duplicate speaker cleanup. We recently added a tool for merging duplicate speakers. If your site has the same person listed more than once, you can edit each entry to use the exact same version and spelling of their name and then contact the service desk to get the speaker listings merged. All related audio links will be preserved.
General improvements
Opus format is now supported for all audio uploads. Besides the mp3 and wav files we have always supported, you can now upload .opus, .oga, or .weba files that use Opus under the hood.
Before deciding to upload Opus audio, teams should consider that older Apple devices only partially support it. About 82% of global web users have full access to Opus audio files, and another 15% can play some but not all Opus audio. Device support details: https://caniuse.com/opus
