Add a new word, phrase, song or story
Introduction
Members of a language team can add words, phrases, song or stories as entries to the language site.
You must be logged in as a member of a language team to add new entries. To learn about how language teams work, check out our information on Team roles on FirstVoices.
This video demonstrates the process for adding a word entry:
Adding words
To add new word entries, click on "Words".
Click on "Create New Word".
Fill in the fields following these guidelines:
Field | Guideline |
---|---|
Word | The word in the Indigenous language. |
Part of speech | Choose from the drop-down menu. For example: verb, noun or adjective |
Pronunciation | Show the word in syllables with hyphens. Use capital letters to show emphasis. For example: van-COU-ver |
Definitions | Describe the meaning in English. If needed, you can add multiple meanings. |
Literal translation | Describe the literal translation, which may be different from the word's meaning. |
Related audio | Upload the audio recording of the word being spoken. |
Related pictures | Upload a picture that shows the meaning of the word. |
Related video | Upload a video that shows the meaning of the word. |
Related phrases | Connect the word to other phrases that use it. |
Categories | Select categories that include the word. For example: animals, food, activities |
Cultural note | Include notes about the word that relate to cultural practices of the community. |
Reference | Note the original person, book or document that the word was spoken by or found in. |
Source | The name of the language recorder who is making the entry. |
Available in Children's Archive | Check this button to make the word accessible in the children's archive. If the word may be inappropriate for children, leave the button unchecked. |
Available in Games | Check this button to include the word in language learning games. |
4. Click "Save" to save the entry.
5. Your entry will be reviewed and published by your language team administrator.
Adding phrases
To add new phrases, click on "Phrases".
Click on "Create New Phrase".
Fill in the fields following these guidelines:
Field | Guideline |
---|---|
Phrase | The phrase in the Indigenous language. |
Definitions | Describe the meaning in English. If needed, you can add multiple meanings. |
Phrase books | Choose which phrase book your new phrase should be included in. You can also create a new phrase book. |
Related audio | Upload the audio recording of the phrase being spoken. |
Related pictures | Upload a picture that shows the meaning of the phrase. |
Related videos | Upload a video that shows the meaning of the phrase. |
Cultural note | Include notes about the phrase that relate to cultural practices of the community. |
Reference | If the word/phrase is sourced from a dictionary or other reference make a note of it here. It could be a citation, a link, or other information. |
Source | The name of the language recorder who is making the entry. |
Available in Children's Archive | Check this button to make the phrase accessible in the children's archive. If the word may be inappropriate for children, leave the button unchecked. |
4. Click "Save" to save for the entry.
5. Your entry will be reviewed and published by your language team administrator.
Adding songs and stories
To add new entries for songs or stories click on "Songs" or "Stories".
Click on "Create Song Book" or "Create Story Book".
Fill in the fields following these guidelines:

Book title | The title in the Indigenous language |
Book title translation | Describe the title's meaning in English. If needed, you can add multiple meanings. |
Book introduction | Introduce the book in the Indigenous language |
Introduction translation | Translate the introduction to English. If needed, you can add multiple meanings. |
Type | Select either Song or Story |
Related audio | Upload the audio recording of the phrase being spoken. |
Related pictures | Upload a picture that shows the meaning of the song or story. |
Related videos | Upload a video that shows the meaning of the song or story. |
Author | Who wrote or performed the song or story. |
Cultural note | Include notes about the song or story that relate to cultural practices of the community. |
Source | The name of the language recorder who is making the entry. |
