What are widgets?
Widgets are blocks of content that you can customize. Once you design and save a widget, it can be used on different areas of your site including your homepage or custom pages.
You and your team can use this page to begin preparing how you would like to design your language site and what information or resources you will need to gather. This page lists the available widget options and their possible content specifications. Yellow boxes indicate that the specification is required.

In addition to the listed settings, widgets require a Nickname when they are created. The Nickname is private to your team and will only be visible on your Admin Dashboard. Use this to help you remember what the widget is about.
Automatic widgets
Alphabet widget
This widget shows your alphabet in an interactive format. It will show any words or phrases that are linked to the alphabet letter, and any notes you have listed.
This widget has no custom specifications. It is automatically generated from your site.
Suggested use: Add to your homepage or to a custom page introducing visitors to your writing system.
New This Week / Statistics widget
The widget automatically shows either 'New This Week', 'New This Month', or 'On This Site' statistics, depending on how recently the site content has been updated.

Suggested use: Add to your homepage to help visitors get a sense of how much is on the site or how often the content is updated.
Word of the Day widget
Your site must have at least one Public word in order for this widget to function. If you do not have any Public words on your site, the widget will not appear.

This widget automatically displays a new 'Word of the Day' from your Dictionary, automatically changing every day.
This widget has no custom specifications. It is automatically generated from your site.
Suggested use: Add to your homepage to help visitors find new words every time they visit.
Blank widgets for adding text
Page Text widget
This widget can only be used on Custom Pages, not on the language site homepage.
An unlimited amount of text that can contain basic formatting such as headers, bold, italics, and lists.

Short Text widget
A short message in large bold text, with space for a translation and an optional audio recording. If you include a link, the Widget will contain a button to take visitors to the page of your choice.

Text With Image widget
A mid-sized paragraph of text to provide basic information on your homepage. You can add an image on either the left or right side, and you can add an optional audio recording. You can link to another page on your site with a customizable button.

Contact Us widget
Language Administrators can list their contact information or the contact information of a community language coordinator.

Suggested use: FirstVoices staff recommends that all teams have a Contact Us widget on their homepage to handle inquiries about the site.
Logo widget
Displays the site’s custom logo and a mid-sized message.

Suggested use: Add to your “Our People” page to discuss the origin of your logo image or credit the creator/designer.
Map widget
This Widget can be used with any sharing link from the First Peoples' Map of B.C. to provide visitors with an interactive, location-based experience right on the homepage.

Suggested use: Add to the “Our People” page to highlight the location of your communities or traditional territories.
Quotes widget
The widget displays 3 quotes with their attributor. You can use this to share things that people have said about your language or site, or to highlight some important phrases.

Suggested use: Add to pages where you want to highlight teachings from elders, testimonials from community members, key phrases in your language, or other important quotations.
Visual widgets
Image widget
The widget displays an image with an option for a caption.

Suggested use: Add to pages where you want to share a single image. Also if you want to share multiple images there is a gallery widget to consider. (see below)
Gallery widget
This widget is for multiple pictures with a button to bring you to the images for that gallery.
The first step to create this widget is to create the gallery and then create widget.

Suggested use: To share multiple images on pages. If you have a collection on images that are from an event, category, story, theme, or any language lesson that would be beneficial to share in this format for language learning. Mentor Apprentice teams share images that help learners and fluent speakers stay in the language.
Video widget
A widget that allows you to share video on your pages. It has functions to slow down the speed or speed it up. It has picture and picture. You are also able to download.

Suggested use: To share videos on pages that need a visual, for instance for sign language. Also, if you want to explain more about a word/phrase/song/story and/or have a fluent speaker who is speaking the language fluently. For larger videos consider uploading to a video hosting platform like youtube or vimeo, then you can add a link to the video.
